#554: let's eat cake. or something.

i don't think i've ever really talked about or featured cakes on this blog.

and it's because i don't plan to order one. srsly.

i mean. if we do order cake, it'll most likely be yummy sheetcake to serve. not a grandiose wedding cake for display. maybe we'll have a little one so we can do the cake cutting thing. i don't know. to me, the wedding cake is as memorable as the favors. which to me, means it's not that memorable. key words: to me.

i will say that i happen to like one of the major wedding trends (is it fading yet) of serving cupcakes in lieu of wedding cake. fiance and i happen to lurve cupcakes. sprinkles being our fave, of course.

but at $3.75 a pop (as big as they are), i'm not sure we want to go there.

enter starbucks.

$5.95/four cupcakes.

they have vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet. the triad. the trinity. i haven't done the taste test yet. but i would suspect they're good. sugar + butter = friends forever, right?

we haven't discussed yet what we're going to do about the whole cake thing. but when we do, i'll bring this up as an option.

Someone told me that Costco's cupcakes are actually quite good. Not sure if I believe it, but it could be worth a shot?

I plan on serving ice cream - my favorite.

Amen, sister. No one comes to a wedding for the cake. Most of it never gets eaten. Talk about waste of a few hundred bucks. We did cupcakes at our wedding and it was perfect. We love rainbow chip cake (yes, as in sprinkle spackled, grocery store cake mix in a box). So my bridesmaids and I baked like 90 of these in the heat of July two days before the wedding, which in itself was a blast, and they turned out super cute. And delicious. It was fun to cut a cupcake as a couple, too!

Starbucks cupcakes are great (and perfect crappy day pick-me-ups) I'm partial to the red velvet.

starbucks red velvet is the way to go! they are so tasty! go buy them; you will not regret it.

love the red velvet. the vanilla ones are good too, but seemed a little rich to me. the red velvet cupcakes are incredible.

Do you live any where near a Whole Foods? We used them for our wedding and it was something like $1.25 per cupcake and they were divine!! Stop in and the pastry chef will totally break it down for you. I got little crystalized flowers on each, all chocolate cake with thick cream cheese frosting...mmmmm.

ohhhhh man i cannot WAIT to make my wedding cake. strawberry chamagne cake with champagne frosting...chocolate guinness stout cake with cream cheese frosting... chocolate port cake with raspberry ganache.... white russian cake.... ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh cake is HUGE for me (but thats because i went to college for pastry and baking mmmmmmmmmmmmm)

if you lived in the new england area.. id make you a cake for cheap because i need to build my portfolio after a cake decorating hiatus.

also to top off claires comment, by the time your guests get a piece of the fondant mess it'll be about a week old. Who wants week old cake?! Yuck.

We're doing an assorted dessert bar. yum. We (my mom and aunt) also plan on making everything from scratch. mini cheesecakes, mini carrot cakes, cupcakes, and i'll probably buy cream puffs, mini eclairs, and truffles from Trader Joe's to round it all out.

I've decided to make my own cupcakes. I'm currently trying to find the correct tip for doing that great swirl you see on fancy cupcakes.. I bought a stupid set at the grocery store and learned that it sucks. I got a real pastry bag and two more star tips, only to go home and realize that THE tip I need is called 1M so I'll probably have to buy that one too now.. but I digress..

My main concern here is how am I going to transport 72 cupcakes to the venue? I looked into "cupcake couriers" but they're like $40 each, and by that cost (I'd need 2) I might as well just pay someone to make them. I was thinking of using the baking pans, but I only have 1.. and even if I borrowed, I don't know that it's the best idea because how do you get them out with the icing on them?

So I'm thinking of cutting holes in boxes that are slightly smaller than the widest point on my pan, so there will be paper sticking out, OR making some kind of rings and attaching them to the bottom inside of boxes and putting the cupcakes in those rings to keep them from sliding around, and then they're also enclosed inside the box.

Anyone have other ideas?(Yes, this is me attempting to hijack your blog to help me figure out how to do this.. sorry)

No favors, no cake. That's what we did. The restaurant served dessert as part of our deal, so we figured it was a waste of money and food to serve both. Nobody cared. By that time, everyone was too drunk to notice anyway.

love love love starbucks cupcakes. mmm... now i'm craving one...

Ingenious! Starbucks' cupcakes are amazing, and Meg is right: The vanilla ones ARE to die for.

I ordered way too many cupcakes at my wedding. If I had to do it over again, I'd order about half the number and I'd also try to be more creative with colours and flavours. However, my candy bar was a hit. Other than choosing my photographer it was the best decision and investment I made. $120 on vases, chinese takeout boxes and candy for 85 guests. By the time dinner started all that was left were 5 scotch mints. Everyone went crazy and raved about it!

Oh, Costco sheetcakes are FABULOUS. In MN, they're $17.98 for a 1/2 sheet (serves 48 people) -- and they are FILLED. Like with chocolate mousse, lemon, cream cheese, strawberry!

I have never seen a cupcake at my Starbucks, but you can bet I'm going to go check tomorrow!

I am totally doing cupcakes too.

Here's another idea- since your wedding is during the brunch hour- maybe do wedding donuts??? You can buy in bulk & they are really tasty.

if you like cheesecake and want to diy, there's a super simple recipe (super simple as in 3.5 ingredients!!) for cupcake size ones. and they're goooood. throw a strawberry on top and call it a day!

Omg the new Starbucks cupcakes are AMAZING. I've had the chocolate and red velvet ones and they truly are fantastic. I think the red velvet one is the best red velvet I've ever had. I say YUM to this idea.

Whole foods also has great cupcakes

I loooooooove Starbucks' cupcakes. And they are so BIG.

We didn't want a big ol' wedding cake either. We had a big ol' pile of cream puffs instead. We adore cream puffs. But all this talk of Starbucks cupcakes makes me want to go spend their gift card I just got from my boss. Mmmm....cupcakes.... Good luck with your decision making!

We have my aunt to bake one, my mum to bake one, the fiancee baking one (he makes a chocolate to die for!) and my friend to bake a couple. The cakes are not grand or very wedding-y, they are just super-yummy cakes. They will all look different as I have not instructed anyone of how they should look. Cheap, good and very personal. Suits us an is not too much trouble for the bakers.

i wanted to do cupcakes at the wedding but got the veto from my mom =(. she wants us to have a traditional cake. i managed to come to a compromise and we'll be doing a cake buffet instead. i'm excited to offer a bunch of diff. flavors for our guests and if we have leftovers, we'll provide little take out boxes b/c you know ppl will always be willing to pig out on more cake later ;).

now here's another option -- someone on another board i frequent is doing ice cream cake from cold stone and it's coming out to $1ish/pp for the sheet cakes. if i didn't think my mom would veto that too (darn her traditional ideas) i'd totally jump on that wagon.

costco's cupcakes are INCREDIBLE. They are cheap and HUGE (softball sized+) The only downside is that they only come in chocolate or vanilla. However, yo could totally decorate them any way you want because they are so ridiculously cheap.....

Also, I bet if you were ordering them they would tint the icing any color you wanted.

Transporting (this is for Anon.):
I've done the major cupcake transport for 5 birthday parties now, the trick is an underbed-storage box form The Container Store. It's big, long and flat, 2 people need to carry it from the car to the venue, but it works great!

If we were having our wedding in an area where french macaroons were easily available, I would have mountains of those and some cupcakes piled onto a dessert table.

Just envisioning it makes me salivate!

Elizabeth said...

hey for transporting cup cakes use cookie sheets and then cut carboard or boxboard to make little boxes. i think it will work. I mean like if you get a case of beer in a box and each one has its own little compartment. Also i've heard of lots of places to get sheet cakes for 1.25$ or less

alison, ask the grocery bakery section if you can buy the plastic containers for the cupcakes. you usually can. i get mine free from my friend's mom who works at one but i think they say they sell them. worth the chance to ask!

i, for one, LOVE the cake and it's actually the most heavily anticipate part of practically any big shindig for me. but i love cake. lol.

i'll have to try out starbuck's cupcakes after all the reviews. hmm, maybe the perfect friday afternoon pick me up?

my sister is trying to start her own pastry shop so she's already offered to do the cupcakes at my wedding. fantastic. all i need to do now is get engaged. =)

I'm with Amber on the Whole Food front, tasty cupcakes that are less than you'd imagine (we call that store whole paycheck). My girlfriend got her sheet cakes there and they were tasty.

You're having an early reception - have you considered fancier doughnuts? If my fiance wasn't baking our cake, I would personally have gone with pie.

Check out A Practical Wedding, they just featured a bride who baked everything herself and served dessert with her husband.

I believe you're in LA... One of my BFs happens to have a fantastic startup cupcake business there. She's amazingly creative and fun. Seriously. Not because she's my friend or anything. She's actually flying to friggin' Montreal to make my cupcakes! But check it out, she can probably arrange something for you on a small budget. She'll totally go the extra mile to accommodate you.

www.bluecupcake.com

You can tell her I sent you there (I've never commented before but I've been spying for a while. I'm a fellow bride-to-be who shares A LOT of your outlook and mindset).

And Tafe, ice cream? How cool is that?

We did little mini cupcakes, bite size things. Three flavors, carrot cake, lemon poppyseed and a brownie w/ mocha frosting. so effing good. I contacted a lady who ran a baking school/baking supply store and asked if she could make them for me. she did them for super cheap AND she transported them to the wedding for me.

I think I got them for about $1 each, delivered.

Try costco -- much cheaper than starbucks but still huge cupcakes.

Autumn said...

We're having cupcakes not because it's trendy but because we're getting married in the middle of nowhere and cupcakes are easier to transport ourselves than a big cake. Publix is making ours, do you have those near you? They're delicious and less than $1 each...

We decided on cheesecake. And to avoid the cake that everyone throws out, we're doing a desert bar type thing where my mom is going to make bite sized cheesecakes, and I'll task someone else to make brownies or lemon bars or macaroons. And then instead of party favors, I'm going to have pastry bags with a little personal touch - my guests can take any leftovers home.
