#535: i did a lot: part I of III.

i went to mac and sephora to get samples of primer after all the helpful comments on post #529. my goal: to test out at least 3 different primers.

so, mac was supremely cheapo and gave me less than a smidgeon of their primer in a little tube thing so i don't know if i'm really going to be able to test how it works. but this is what it looks like.

sephora gave me a sample of something called skinprep. it apparently works miracles no matter what type of skin you have. see conversation below.

"i have oily skin."

"it's good for oily skin!"

"i also have flaky skin."

"it's good for flaky skin!"

"i don't want to be shiny."

"it will decrease shine!"

"i think 'glowy' would be ok though."

"it will increase the glowy shine!"

"but i'm using bare minerals, not liquid foundation."

"it's good for use with powder!"

...

"you're ugly."**

"i'm ugly!"**

*********************************

sephora also gave me another kind of primer to test out but i've already forgotten what it's called. it wasn't the smashbox photo finish though. and for some reason, the saleslady wasn't too keen on smashbox. who knows why. kind of makes me wonder if the peeps at sephora really know what they're talking about...or if they're pushing the 'product of the month'.

**didn't really happen.

I think Smashbox is way overrated....but I love the Laura Mercier one.

I love MAC's Prep + Prime. The smell is a bit funky, but it goes away after a few minutes. It really takes any redness out and smooths out your skin. I think it's because there's silicone in it. For the price, I think it's one of the best primers out there. I've also tried Dr. Brandt's Pores No More and was pretty enthusiastic about it until I got a sample and realized that if you don't spread it out quick enough it starts to flake on your face. Gross.

I do not like the smashbox. i did use it. I'm oily, dry in some spots, flakey in others and have such a shine. However, the smashbox did not work well on me. i am using laura mercier primer. I prefer laura... but i'm open to a new one. let me know how the MAC one works out for you!

I just want to mention that I have oily skin and I bought a tube of the MAC primer. I was way less than impressed. Maybe it will work better for you, but it actually made me more shiny.

I love Laura Mercier's primer for oily skin. I used it for my wedding, along with bare minerals makeup, and it lasted all day and night. I get flaky skin, too, so I exfoliated gently for a few days in a row pre-wedding. It helped. Another great Laura Mercier primer product is the one for eyelids. I dunno 'bout you, but my eyelids get oily and it makes my eye shadow migrate to the creases. The Mercier eye shadow primer keeps the shadow in place til you take it off. That was great on my wedding day, because I didn't want to be bothered with touching up my shadow.

I just read on a board somewhere else that Monistat Anti-Chaffing gel works wonders as a primer and is 1/3 as expensive as other primers. I haven't tried it and I know it seems weird, but look this up in google... there are tons of entries about it.

Hey, srsly, let me know what happens, I have the same skin, and also wanted to be matte and not blotchy on the wedding day.

I haven't used it yet, but a friend of mine SWEARS by this line of makeup. I guess they have a primer and a little jar of this magic white powder that makes your pores disappear. I have combination skin too...and I can't WAIT to try it!!!

I love Makeup Forever's primer. I do make-up for weddings & photography & that is my preferred primer. Sephora also has a primer in their line that is nice (& cheap). Keep in mind though, what works for me may not work for you. You just gotta try a few & figure out what works with your skin. Personally, I don't like anything with too much silicone as it tends to roll up if you don't blend it well enough or if you press too hard when applying your foundation. With a mineral foundation, it's almost a given since you're supposed to "buff" it on.

Good luck!

I love the Skinprep stuff... I use it with the whole FX system. The FX system def. lasts longer than any other makeup I have tried.

For me it's a tossup between Smashbox and Laura Mercier's spackle. Like others who have an oily t-zone, Laura Mercier's spackle didn't make me even oilier. I also recommend Urban Decay for eye shadow primer potion. Good luck!!

what do you know about smear/runproof eyeliner? I'm a crier and don't want to look like a raccoon on the big day... anyway, any thing you know would be sooo great.

i'd love to know what you decide to go with! i'm also thinking of doing my own makeup, because i don't want to look "overly made up" on the big day - the boy is VERY picky about this subject, and that would just be awful. let us know!!
