so. if i were to use something like this (maybe a bit bigger, or maybe several different height'd vases bunched together) as a centerpiece...as a guest, would you think it was weird if i didn't put any flowers in it?

I don't know about the grammar, but I do think it would look odd to have empty vases on the table. Fill them with water and put some floating candles in them? Or those light-up ice cube things!
Yep, its weird. Maybe with a candle so it has a stained glass effect. On second thought, are you the one who's not having any candles? I think I'm subscribed to too many blogs...
I would definitely at least put a candle in them. It is a BEAUTIFUL vase, but it may look odd with no flowers or candles. Even just a small tea light candle in the bottom to light it up a bit. Is it large enough to put some decorative branches in or something similar?

if totally empty is weird, maybe i'll get dried lavender bunches in bulk and stick 'em in the vases.

Since your subject ("a centerpiece") is singular, your pronoun should also be singular, not plural. Therefore it should be "if i didn't put any flowers in it". Its tricky because you are referring to more than one centerpiece; however, your sentence refers to only one, as an example.
(don't hate me! i think that vase is beautiful. you could find all sorts of non-floral fillers, though. a candle is simple, the dried branches would be cool- just not both! :) what popped into my head was using one or two shades of tissue paper- creased like you'd see in a gift bag? maybe add a couple crystal-tipped bouquet stems...)
i do think completely empty would be odd, as a guest i would assume someone forgot to do something. putting anything in it would be fine... you could even put shredded paper in there (though i don't recommend it) just something to make the centerpiece look "finished"

If the vases are level, you could try placing them upside down as the design looks like it is still functional the other direction. And then you could place candles on the top or the table name/number.
I think it would be odd to have empty vases everywhere. If you don't want to use flowers, how about fruit or some other kind of decoration like candles?

ok so no candles. I think you could do something with the branches and chandelier crystals that could be cool. And if the sun is right it would maybe cast pretty rainbows on your tables. Or if you end up with clear vases and lots of time you could make a TON of these balls in all kinds of colors and just fill it up. Then you can use the balls as holiday decorations depending on the colors you chose.

I don't htink leaving it empty is a bad thing. As long as it is intentional on every table then people will be more likely to realize the idea of what you were going with.
