#364: a new lead.

remember this?

well, there have been a few developments since then.

1) in the past month, two close girlfriends have gotten engaged. one of them lives in boston (wedding to be in buffalo NY) and the other lives in...dublin. as in...dublin, ireland. and they're both planning to have 2009 weddings (september and august, respectively). *side note: i'm also the MOH for one of my closest friends...who's planning to get married this december. in oman. o-what, you say? oman, i said.* and the most recent news...fresh from last week...the fiance's best friend is THISCLOSE to getting engaged. and he's planning to have a march or april 2009 wedding. in korea.

um. so while you soak that in, let me give you the 2nd piece of news.

2) the couple-friend booked a venue and date. it's all set for april 11th.

2.5) given the multitude of multitudes of weddings we need to attend (6 or 7), be in (1), and throw (1) in 2009...i'd rather get our wedding pushed up to the beginning so we don't have to stress about it amidst all of the other weddings in our calendar for the year. besides, we don't want to run the risk of overlapping with fiance's best friend (who's also the best man!) and the couple-friend by sticking with april. which means...we're now seriously considering a february 2009 wedding.

3) i'm going to check out my relative's house and determine once and for all whether it could accommodate the type of wedding i want to host. i've only seen his abode once, about a year ago, and remember thinking that his pad would make an amazing party venue. i had thought about it before...but never pursued this option because i didn't want to put him in a weird position. but...fear is for dummies. and people can say no if they really want to...and he's the type who would. so, though we don't know if it'll work, i'll be visiting the house tomorrow, checking out the space, the backyard, the pool house, the patio.

guess who's crossing fingers, toes, arms, legs and eyes.

so. what do you think? february 2009 semi-backyard wedding in los angeles. ridiculously cold...? or totally do-able...? give it to me on the real.

I don't know about the weather, but I say do it! Long engagements that drag out are a drag. You'll be so happy that you won't have to stress the rest of the year!

I agree with Abbie, long engagements can drive you crazy! As for the weather, it will probably be a bit cold and it might even rain, BUT, will a tent and a few patio heaters (like the ones at the restaurants) fit into your budget?

my first inclination is to say go for it! you can always rent heaters pretty cheaply. but be careful - backyard weddings can get expensive (especially if you rent a tent, which I'm guessing you'll want if you're having it outside in the winter) and if you need bathrooms. it all adds up!

you DEFINITELY need a rain plan for a february wedding, even in l.a.! if you can figure that out, i say go for it!

The weather is so beautiful in the winter here... but the rain might be an issue. If you can plan for it, I say go for it. You might just get one of those clear, 72 degree days that only winter in LA can offer!

I say do it. February is actually one of the cheapest months to get married in so that will help out the budget!

i think moving the wedding up is a GREAT idea. there'll be enough to do for your wedding that you don't need to be adding the stress of other people's wedding and all these trips at the same time.
unfortunately i have no clue what LA weather is in February but i know that you can rent tents, tent walls, tent heaters, etc. so you can have an outdoor wedding whenever you want : )

(plus Feb is all about love right? perfect.)

I've got a super long engagement (23 months - about 4 months down) and so far i've been soaking it up and enjoying every second. But its true, a lot of stuff can't be booked more than 12 months out. WHAT A PAIN! HOWEVER, I'm looking at a wedding early march 2010 and I even thought of February... I think it could be nice but for the rain issue (if you can set up a plan b with tents?) but honestly, i prefer breezy, chilly, cold to hot, sweaty summers - so i may be bias. However, I think backyard weddings are awesome. Intimate and can give you some flexibility to do things that will truly reflect you and your FI.

I know that taking friends' dates into account is the practical thing to do, but I would hate for the weather not to be perfect and for you to always remember picking a different month from your ideal because of someone else.

I would stick to your original plan. Like my MOH says, the complainers will always find something to complain about.

Weather is all over the place around here. I thought my sis's November wedding might be cold and it ended up being almost too hot. Check to make sure someone around will be able to rent you a tent at the last minute if necessary.

my goodness! I thought having one of my BM's getting married two months ahead of me was stressful!
Go with February. It is a good excuse to shorten the engagement, and it will be nice to get yours done so you won't be super-stressed for everyone else's. As for the weather... it's LA, it might be cold, it might be hot, but is the weather here ever really that bad? A tent would be good in case of rain if the home won't accommodate everyone, but I wouldn't let that be a deterrent. Think about if you don't move to Feb. because of the weather, and then on your day it rains anyways!

Go for it. It's off-season, and you'll save a ton of money.

A) You can totally do it! You've been doing the leg work for ages now, you'll rock it.

B) I echo the rain warnings. I've lived many years in LA, and I remember Feb's where it rained every single day. No joke. That month IS the rainy season.

do it! i wanted a short engagement and was overruled by everybody. tents and heat lamps and you're good to go!

Backyard weddings kick ass. Hit it.

I agree with everyone moving the date up. Go for it. FYI March is another one of the cheapest months to get married in to save you money... maybe get you a little closer to warmer/nicer weather too?

Please don't tell me that you guys have to pay to go to all those far-away locations!

I was going to say you better get a dress today!...but remembered you already bought one at AK (I wore the original Caitlyn with no halter)...you are honestly far enough ahead to pull it off. DO IT!

I had - or I should say my other half - has a similar problem. When he asked his best man and one of his groomsmen (who lives in Scotland) to be in the wedding party, they both said "that's so funny, I was just about to call you to ask you to be in MY wedding- I just popped the question too!" Best man lives in LA but his lady is from FRANCE. Hello expensive! Scotland in September, France somewhere around that time, and our wedding in October. Yowzers!
I panicked (a little) thinking that we had to "claim" our date until I spoke with my very wise and balanced (Libra) MOH. She reminded me that things have a way of working themselves out. So our Scotland guy may not be able to be in our wedding party, and we may not make it to his.
It could be sunny, rainy, grey, or hailing in February. Who knows?! It just hailed in CT a few weeks ago. You can't plan around the weather - but a Feb. wedding would absolutely be cheaper. Just choose what's right for the wedding you want - not other people getting married, no matter how close they are to you.
